Merriam-Webster Dictionary At the last meeting, Club President Jack Cooney welcomed members attending in person and via Zoom. The Secretary did not have any business to report. The Treasurer reported that the Club remains in good financial condition and reminded all to pay their dues. The Tri-Lit dinner committee reported that plans have been finalized for the 10th annual dinner on 12 April 2023 at Ritz Charles on North Meridian Street. The speaker will be Quaker pastor and author Phillip Gulley. Cost for dinner and program is $70 per person and reservations are due by 27 March 2023. See the attached flyer for more details. Following the business of the Club, essayist Stephen J. Jay then presented his essay, “One Health pro Bono – Twice Blessed” which focused on the AIDS epidemic and the roles that Indiana University and numerous Hoosiers played in addressing this world-wide medical issue. Essayist Jay also discussed advocacy efforts by U2 singer Bono that has kept the issue before the world for many years. A lively period of conversation followed. A reminder that the Club maintains a website – www.literaryclub.org – where you can read past essays, learn about the history of the Club, and find contact information for your fellow Club members. Make sure that your calendars are marked for the next meeting of the Indianapolis Literary Club – 8:00 p.m. Monday 6 February 2023 – both in person at Clowes Commons and via Zoom. An invitation to the Zoom meeting will be sent a couple days before the meeting. Join the Club that evening when first-time essayist James W. Brown will present his essay, “Mysterious Role of Code in the Formation of Pre-Pixels in the US.” What is this “mysterious role of code”? And what does it have to do with “pre-pixels”? Given the essayist’s background in journalism, might it have something to do with the field of photojournalism? The Secretary has no clue so you will need to attend in person or via Zoom to learn what essayist Brown has in mind. Hope to see you there! The Secretary ____________________________David G.
